Workshop, Date, Location Conveners Brief description
Community & MAR ISS Meetings
March, 2008
Portland, OR
Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Donna Blackman, Peter Michael, Susan Humphris, Emilie Hooft Upcoming. The first part of these meetings will bring together the community to discuss science integration at all R2K ISS during 2 days of talks and posters. There will be a 2 day workshop to draft an implementation plan for a new ISS at the ~35-37.5°N section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Endeavour ISS Science and Planning Workshop
July, 2006
Seattle, WA
Deborah Kelley, William Wilcock, David Butterfield Attended by over 30 scientists with research interests in the Endeavour ISS. Meeting goals were to provide an update on recent results from Endeavour and upcoming cruises, to provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and data and discuss methods of integrating various datasets, and to discuss opportunities for future collaborative activities.
Lau ISS Science and Planning Workshop
June, 2006
Reno, NV
Doug Wiens, Donna Blackman, Chuck Fisher The aim was to obtain updates of ongoing data analyses for the 2004/2005 cruises in the Lau Basin, to discuss interdisciplinary aspects of these initial findings, and to establish priorities for subsequent R2K work along the Eastern Lau Spreading Center. Attended by 40 scientists with research interests in the Lau ISS including representatives from NSF and Kingdom of Tonga.
Ridge Theoretical Institute short course and workshop
June, 2006
Mammoth Lakes, CA
Robert Lowell, Jeff Seewald, Chuck Fisher, Michael Perfit, Andreas Teske Focused on modeling hydrothermal processes as a whole system. The RTI was attended by just under 100 scientists and included 2 days of short course/science talks, a poster session, a 1 day field trip to Long Valley volcanic system and 2 days of intense workshop attended by approximately 20 selected scientists. RTI speakers are contributing to an AGU Geophysical Monograph, which is currently in preparation.
East Pacific Rise ISS Science & Planning Mtg
April, 2006
LDEO, NY
Dan Fornari, Suzanne Carbotte The primary goals of this workshop were to bring together investigators of ongoing projects at the EPR ISS to discuss 2006/2007 field season opportunities for data collection and to advance detailed discussions and integration of ongoing R2K research. Attended by 35 scientists.
Ridge 2000 Progress and Planning Workshop
November, 2005
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Donna Blackman This was a large community meeting aimed at updating the community on recent TCS work, preliminary results from on-going ISS projects and scheduled field programs. Included plenary science talks and smaller breakout discussion groups for each ISS and TCS. Attended by over 100 scientists and included an active poster session.
Ridge 2000 Mid-Atlantic Ridge Workshop
February/March, 2004
Providence, RI
Deborah Kelley, Deborah Smith, Chuck Fisher, Javier Escartin, Juan Pablo Canales, Peter Girguis This workshop brought together researchers form the US and abroad to examine current research interests on the slow-spreading northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Attended by 67 scientists who reached a consensus on locating a future ISS at the 35° – 37.5° N section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (InterRidge MoMAR site).
Ridge 2000 Community Meeting Workshop
November, 2003
Boulder, CO
James Cowen, Chuck Fisher The purpose of this meeting was to bring the community together to discuss the status of the R2K Program: where the program is now, where it is headed, and how the scientific community can achieve the goals we set in the science and implementation plans. The workshop included plenary sessions, breakout groups and a poster session and was attended by over 100 scientists.
Ridge 2000 Implementation Plan Workshop
April, 2002
Albuquerque, NM
Scientists with an interest or prior experience working at each of the ISS met to develop a consensus on R2K research priorities, the location of focus sites where 1-10's m scale experimented would be co-located, and some logistical approaches for achieving the goals within the span of the Program. Implementation Plans were draft, posted for community input, revised and made available to the full community.
R2K Community Education Meeting
February, 2002
Long Beach CA
A wide range of new and prior ridge scientists and students were invited for a series of lectures intended to 'level the playing field' so that anyone interested in participating in R2K research had access to information needed to write a competitive proposal or to join team targeting a site.
