Seyfried: In-situ Monitoring of Vent Fluid Chemistry

1. PI-Project Information

Name: Kang Ding/Bill Seyfried
Institution: University of Minnesota
Email address: wes@umn.edu
Project Title: In-Situ Chemical Sensors for Monitoring the Chemistry of Hydrothermal Vent Fluids at Mid-Ocean Ridges: Instrument Development and Field Applications
NSF-OCE number: OCE-0525907
Upcoming cruise ID and dates: late December/early January 2007/2008

2. Planned Sampling Requirements

  • 2.1. Types of Samples:
  • We will be using high-temperature fluid samplers/gas-tight samplers in support of sensor operations.

  • 2.2. Type of Sample Locality:
  • We will be deploying sensors at both high-temperature and diffuse flow sits. The diffuse flow sites are to be closely linked to the high-T focused flow systems.

  • 2.3. Seafloor Collection Devices to be Used:
  • Majors and gas-tight fluid samplers. We will also deploy a newly developed sensor system for pH measurement with internal calibrating capability.

  • 2.4. Seafloor Experiments to be Deployed:
  • We will deploy 1 chemical sensor system with associated datalogger at both a focused flow and companion diffuse flow system. It is unclear whether markers will be needed.

3. Planned Duration of Seafloor Experiments:

It is planned that the experiments will last the length of the cruise.

4. Constraints on Your Deployment Plans:

  • 4.1. Will vehicle operations be allowable in your experiment area? If so, with what restrictions for sampling or imaging (e.g., non-invasive observations or mapping).
  • Yes.

  • 4.2. What is the proximity (meters distant) from your experiment(s) that future sampling can be done.
  • N/A- Since our plan our plan at this point is to remove the sensors at the end of the cruise.

  • 4.3. What is the proximity (meters distant) to which other in-situ instrument deployments can be made.
  • Our sensors will need direct access to the highest temperature portions of vent fluids.

  • 4.4. Will you be using acoustic devices or moorings?
  • N/A

  • 4.4. Are you looking for other experiments that can be co-located with your experiments?
  • No- not at this time- but our capabilities will have broadly based applications for biology and geochemistry.

  • 4.5. Does your experiment require site protection? To what level of tolerance?
  • No.

5. Other Issues?
