Foot Notes (fn)
Key points noted below, for full information please consult submitted instrumentation forms online at Ridge2000 web site)
fn1
Cormier et al. may dredge but away from bull's eye, ~20 BPRs to be deployed, near axis, have glass floatation spheres - not certified for Alvin use, possible conflict with Edgetech acoustics also used by Thurnherr et al (see fn8).
fn2
Ding/Seyfried will deploy their chem and pH sensor at hi and lowT vents, need access to highest temp orifice available, instruments will not be left after their cruise.
fn3
Fornari/Soule TowCam \mapping programs are done on an ancillary basis, not to interfere with other programs. No sampling with TowCam rock cores near experiments.
fn4
Lilley will deploy his resistivity probes at 1-2 sites for a year. The instruments need to not be disturned or removed from the site and inserting other instruments into the orifice may disrupt measurements.
fn5
Mullineaux et al. have deployed various colonization experiments in association with the Thurnherr moorings. See Thurnherr et al's pdf for map and description. Other instruments are allowed at nearby sites but with restrictions of ~ 3m and no prop wash. Please read pdf for details.
fn6
Shank et al. have an integrated macro-, microbiological, chemical (including in situ chemistry), and time lapse photography experiment based on several detailed transects at low T diffuse flow sites and associated hiT vents. They are asking for ~10 m standoff to their experiments and no prop wash. Please read webpage for details.
fn7
Sievert will be using large volume pumps and no deployed long term experiments are planned. Some experiments perhaps will be done in conjunction with Shank et al.
fn8
Thurnherr et al. have deployed physical oceanographic moorings at several sites in coordination with the Mullineaux biological experiments. 2 Moorings are on axis in the 9°50'N area, see map in their webpage. They are using Edgetech acoustics for their releases, possible conflict with Cormier et al (see fn1).
fn9
Vetriani is working with Shank et al. and focused on microbiological studies that will sample lowT and highT vents using pumps, slurps, Ti majors, with deployment of SS round collection devices (see his webpage) for 1 yr.
fn10
Von Damm work is focused on sampling all hiT vents in the EPR ISS in the 9 17 to 9 51 area using Ti majors and gas tights (with Lilley) and in recovering/deploying hiT fluid loggers at vent orifices. Sulfides associated with the chimney orifices sampled for fluids will also be recovered for microbiology and mineral chemistry studies. She will also be sampling some diffuse flow areas associated with the hiT vents. Needs access to highest T orifices and loggers should not be disturbed after insertion.
fn11
White/Soule will be conducting a small DSL-120A sidescan sonar survey to map the 2005-2006 EPR lava flows. Care willneed to be taken when towing near 9° 50'N near the LADDER moorings deployed by Thurnherr et al (see fn8).
