Data Compliance Form
Principal Investigators (PIs) who receive funding from NSF Ocean Sciences are expected to make their data broadly available through publicly accessible repositories. The Ridge 2000 Program has worked closely with the Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS) at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to develop the R2K Data Portal, which serves as a searchable online repository of data collected from oceanic spreading centers. MGDS also manages data from the NSF MARGINS Program, Antarctic Program, and other programs.
To help achieve compliance with NSF and Ridge 2000 Program Data Policies, and as required for all proposals submitted to the Feb 15, 2011 target date (see section C.2.j. - Proposal Preparation Instructions):
The NSF-funded data management group (IEDA) at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory that operates MGDS, GfG and other marine geoscience databases and data discovery tools has developed a tool to assist PIs in complying with the data management plan requirement recently implemented by NSF. The form/tool is sufficiently generic to cover many data types. It includes fields and prompts for creating a robust data management plan in a wide variety of disciplines in the earth and ocean sciences.
The filled out form can be used as one or more pages of your data management plan. The tool/form can be accessed at:
http://www.iedadata.org/compliance/plan
This form does double duty by providing you with a means to comply with the new NSF requirement. By filling out the form and clicking the submit button, the tool generates a .pdf file of the entered information that can then be included in your proposal. The info is also stored in a database so that you can retrieve/modify it at your convenience. If your proposal is awarded, the .pdf can be submitted to the IEDA data managers so they can provide you with guidance on data submission and archiving for data types that they host.
