SEAS Cruise 2007 : People
Rich Lutz - Marine Ecologist
- What do you do? Where do you work?
- I'm a professor at Rutgers University. My field of study is Marine Ecology - a marine ecologist studies the relationship between organisms and their environment.
- What is your education/training?
- I received a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Virgina and a Ph.D from the University of Maine. I then spent 3 years in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University doing additional research they call "postdoctoral studies."
- What inspired you to choose your career & who were your role models?
- I always loved the ocean and this is probably what inspired me to choose my career in marine biology and ecology. I would say that my "role model" was my father whom I admired tremendously. He was not a marine scientist, but was someone who was very, very influential in my life.
- What are some of your favorite things about life at sea?
- One of my favorite things about life at sea is that on every dive you make in Alvin, you see something that no one else has ever seen before.
- What do you do in your free time?
- I like to play tennis, swim and spend quality time in woods and gardens.
- Is there any message you'd like to send the SEAS students?
- You should know that the most exciting discoveries have yet to be made and that you and others in your generation are the ones that get to make these discoveries.
