SEAS Cruise 2007 : People
Evan Kovacs - Alvin Group
- Where is your hometown?
- My hometown is in the fourth world, otherwise known as hotels and airports. My house is in New Jersey, but I'm not there very often.
- What is your role on this cruise?
- I am here to support the high definition and 3D cameras we will use on the Alvin submersible for this cruise. I work closely with the Alvin pilots to make sure the video equipment on the sub works properly.
- What is your education/training?
- I started as an actor in NY and then got into doing lighting and sound at Lincoln Center and across the city. About three years ago, I started working on a TV show doing underwater lighting and eventually the filming. Now I go around the world filming, mostly underwater, but wherever the documentary takes us.
- What inspired you to choose your career & who were your role models?
- I love diving on wrecks and in underwater caves, and have a desire to share how cool and important marine ecosystems are with other people. One of my role models is Stan Waterman, who shot the film "Blue Water White Death".
- Please describe your family:
- My dad lives in the country, my mom lives by the beach. I have one brother in Tokyo, one brother in Philadelphia, two stepsisters in New Jersey, and my girlfriend lives in Brooklyn. I have about ten Irish cousins running around New York, New Jersey and Hungary.
- What are some of your favorite things about life at sea?
- No cell phone, good food. I get more sleep here than anywhere else and Atlantis has a great movie selection. Plus, one night when anchored on a wreck, we were surrounded by dolphins which was very exciting.
- What do you like to do in your free time (e.g., hobbies, travel, music, books, etc)?
- Stay at home! Or visit with my family and see my dog Scrapps. I also like to reread Tolkien and CS Lewis every year if I get the chance.
- Is there any message you'd like to send to the SEAS students?
- I started as an actor and ended up at sea 12 years later. Life can lead you anywhere if you let it.
