SEAS Cruise 2007 : People
Don Nuzzio - Analytical Chemist
- What do you do? Where do you work?
- I am the President of Analytical Instrument Systems, Inc. I am involved in construction of rugged reliable analytical instruments for oceanographic research.
- What is your role on this cruise?
- My role on this cruise is to insure that a critical piece of equipment I designed for in-situ electrochemistry is operating. Also, I am trying out a new type of underwater communication system I designed which could revolutionize how underwater communication works. We are currently working on and will test a new data-logger that could log four sensors for temperature, pH, flow and pressure.
- What is your education/training?
- I have a B.S. in chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a M.S. in physical chemistry and a PhD in analytical chemistry from Rutgers University.
- What inspired you to choose your career?
- Seeing how people work and how I can make their tasks easier! Designing analytical instruments that are reliable and give the researcher a better way to measure all types of chemistry in the ocean. My role models are my Dad and Thomas Edison.
- Please describe your family:
- I have been married for 26 years to my best friend Linda and have two children. Kristin is an honors chemistry and Spanish major at University of Delaware and my son Donald Jr., is a freshman at the Pennington School.
- What are some of your favorite things about life at sea?
- The ability to focus on research and not be distracted from the everyday things-no phone!
- What do you do in your free time?
- I enjoy reading, photography and rock collecting with my son.
- Is there any message you'd like to send to the SEAS students?
- Always follow your dreams; they can lead to very exciting things your whole life.
