A.D. Colburn - Captain, R/V Atlantis
- What is your job title, and what do you do?
- I am the Captain of R/V Atlantis.
- How long have you been working on the R/V Atlantis?
- I have recently become Captain of the Atlantis, but I've been working on ships for 27 years. For the last 10 years, I was Captain of the Knorr (another WHOI vessel).
- What is your background/education/training?
- I earned a BS in Marine Transportation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1978.
- What inspired you to choose this career/who were your role models?
- My Dad, Captain Colburn has had a great influence on me. He was Captain of the sailing vessel, Atlantis. I was inspired by other Captains at WHOI as well: Capt. Hiller, Capt. Howland, and Capt. Palmieri. My teacher, John Moody, who taught and tutored me from 7th grade through the
Maritime Academy, also influenced my career.

- My home is in Woods Hole, MA.
- Please describe your family:
- I am married with two children, both girls, ages 18 and 21.
- What are some of your favorite things about life at sea?
- The people are great out here. I enjoy interacting with crew and the scientists.
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- I enjoy recreational boating, fishing, and fly tying.
- Is there any message you'd like to send to the SEAS students?
- Continue your education beyond high school to whatever level you can achieve based on what you love to do. Do not be stopped from achieving your goal by temporary setbacks. Don't quit; just keep going!
