Join SEAS and be a scientist!
Get started
Learn about the deep-sea environment by:
- Reading about hydrothermal vents and our deep-sea study site in the East Pacific
- Doing activities from the SEAS curriculum (your teacher can help with this)
Work with data
Collect your own data by following instructions in the classroom-to-sea mussel lab. Compare your measurements with a deep-sea dataset. Read the scientists' notes on how the deep-sea data were collected.
Do background research
Think of reasons why your data and the deep-sea data are the same or different. To get ideas, read articles in our online reference library. Discuss your ideas with your classmates.
During a recent research cruise, researchers posted news from our deep-sea study site (where there have been volcanic eruptions recently).
Interact with Scientists at sea (closed at this time)
Read updates from sea as scientists study a recent eruption at the study site.
Read questions students have asked deep-sea scientists via the ask-a-scientist forum.
Communicate your work (closed at this time)
Write a report, submit it to the SEAS report fair, and earn prizes in various categories.
